About File Formats

It is important to know in what format you are saving your file. You might need to convert a file into a particular format that can be accessed from a different software program than the one in which it was created. For example, Rich Text Format (*.rtf) is especially helpful if your instructor is using MS Word®, but you are using a different word processor, such as WordPerfect®, Notepad®, or SimpleText® to create the file. You will need to save the file as an .rtf file so that your instructor may view it.

Most word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software programs contain a "Save as..." option, located under the "File" menu. From here, you can select a variety of file formats, including Word Document (*.doc), Rich Text Format (*.rtf), or Text (*.txt).
